Admission Examinations
Entrance exams are required in music theory and dictation, as appropriate to your level of entrance. Sample tests are not available — we want to see what you can do without specific test prep. The results of these exams are used for class and program placement.
After pre-screening decisions are released, all applicants eligible for an audition will receive information regarding the online theory examinations. The exams must be completed by February 1. If the exam is not complete by the audition day, you will be required to complete the exam on the day of your audition. Final decisions are not released unless the required materials and exams are complete.
What if I don't pass?
If you've been admitted and you don't meet expected entrance requirements, you must register for appropriate remedial coursework.
Does CIM accept advanced placement test results?
If you're an undergraduate applicant, we do accept AP test results in many subject areas. However, we do not accept AP test results in the area of music theory. Instead, we use the results of your admission examinations to determine advanced placement, as warranted.
