CIM Receives First-Ever Endowed Presidential Scholarship, Given by Dr. Clive Hamlin

In a moving moment during its annual meeting on September 13, 2018, the Cleveland Institute of Music announced that longtime donor Dr. Clive Hamlin has established the Institute’s first-ever Presidential Scholarship. Dr. Hamlin’s $1.5 million gift in honor of his late wife Mary provides full tuition plus room, board and fees for an exceptional student. Dr. Hamlin’s gift is the fourth-largest from an individual in school history. 

“This is a truly remarkable moment in CIM’s history,” says President & CEO Paul W. Hogle. “There’s a beautiful story here, of Clive and Mary’s love for and commitment to classical music coupled with the deep desire to encourage young people to pursue their passion for the arts. In considering their legacy, they chose to empower others to help them fulfill their dreams and potential.  

“Clive is one of the most unassuming, caring people I’ve had the pleasure of knowing,” Hogle continues. “Through his long career as a professor at Case Western Reserve University, he understands how access to education transforms lives. We are deeply grateful that he has chosen to honor Mary’s memory through this extraordinary act of philanthropy.”  

This gift sets the Institute on a course to create the equivalent of 50 Presidential Scholarships over the next decade. CIM’s strategic plan, known as Blueprint:100, recognizes the need to significantly lower the net cost of education for all CIM students, as well as to have more scholarship dollars available to attract the next generation of the world’s most talented classical music students.  

Dr. Clive Hamlin is an emeritus associate professor in the department of pathology and director of the immunology training program at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He was a faculty member at CWRU for nearly 50 years. Mary Hamlin led the local chapter of Daughters of the British Empire and was president of Northern Ohio Opera League; she passed away in 2017 after a long illness. CIM’s Major Gifts Officer Holly Selvaggi assisted Dr. Hamlin in achieving his gift intentions.
