CIM congratulates winners of 32nd annual Darius Milhaud Performance Prizes

Olympic athletes aren’t the only ones earning prizes these days. CIM students, too, are distinguishing themselves in competition.

On Thursday, Feb. 12, CIM announced the winners of its 32nd annual Darius Milhaud Performance Prizes. The contest took place Tuesday, Feb. 10 in Kulas Hall and featured performances of five works by 11 students.

CIM thanks all who took part in the event and congratulates the several young artists who earned prizes. CIM takes pride in the successes of both its students and its faculty, and Milhaud Performance Prizes are significant achievements by any standard.

CIM also thanks the six members of the faculty who served as judges: Stanislav Golovin, Andrew Hosler, Daria Rabotkina, Marcelo Rebuffi, Gerardo Teissonnière, and Carolyn Warner.

The first prize of $700 went to oboist Erin Yun, clarinetist David Chang, and bassoonist Alton French, for their performance of Milhaud’s Suite d’après Corrette, Op. 161b.

This year, judges opted not to award a second prize. Rather, they granted third prizes of $300 each to two ensembles, ruling their performances a tie.

Those awards went to violinist Eivissa Pla Sorolla, clarinetist Tao Ke, and pianist Ania Lin, for their performance of the Suite for Clarinet, Violin, and Piano, Op. 157b; and to soprano Catherina Carrington and pianist Yao Xiao, for their performance of Quatre Chansons de Ronsard, Op. 223.

Honorable mentions were also granted to pianists Snow Li and Kano Luo, for their performance of Scaramouche, Op. 165b.

CIM enjoyed a long affiliation with composer Darius Milhaud (1892–1974), and every year, CIM students compete for cash prizes honoring best performances of a work by him. Prizes are made possible through funds from CIM’s Darius Milhaud endowment.
